How can I get AdsGone to work for all users/profiles under Windows XP or 2000?
If you installed AdsGone in Windows XP, NT or 2000, you should install it as either the Administrator, or on XP, the first user account that was created.
To get AdsGone working for each user, you need to:
- logon as each user and use windows explorer to find c:\program files\AdsGone\AdsGone.exe
- Run AdsGone.exe which will start AdsGone.
- Open AdsGone by clicking on the Icon near your clock. If you don't see the Icon, try opening Internet Explorer.
- Goto the 'Startup' tab.
- Click the 'Start AdsGone when Windows starts' checkbox. Uncheck it first, then click it again so it's checked on. This makes sure a 'shortcut' to AdsGone is placed in the windows startup folder.
- Reboot to make sure AdsGone is starting with Windows (you may have to also bring up Internet Explorer to see the AdsGone Icon).
At this point, is AdsGone working correctly?
If not, please install AdsGone again for this user by clicking the download button above (which will make sure all DLL's are properly registered).
Finally, if AdsGone doesn't block banner ads, but DOES seem to be running ok, there is a case when AdsGone can't update a critical file (the windows 'hosts' file).
- Logon as the Administrator (or with XP the first user that was set up) .
- Locate (using windows explorer) 'c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts'
- Right-Click to get the file properties.
- Click on the Security Tab. Make sure the file has write permissions for your other user accounts.
- Another way to do this is to 'ADD' the 'Everyone' group to the permissions and give 'full' access to the 'Everyone' group.
- You should also give 'full' rights to the 'Everyone' group for the '...\etc' directory as well.
